The Black and Tan is the only breed of Coonhound recognized by the American Kennel Club and was admitted to its registry in 1945. Since the Black and Tan is the oldest of the Coonhounds breeds, more information is available on the him than any of other breeds of the Coonhound family. The Black and Tan Coonhound was admitted into the UKC in 1900.
The ancestry of this "grand old breed", like many of the other Coonhounds, is directly linked to the Foxhound group of dogs; specifically, the Black and Tan Foxhounds of the 19th century. It is likely that the Bloodhound also made a contribution to this breeds ancestry. The Black an d Tan Coonhound is relatively slow on the trail, compared to some of the Foxhound, and owing to his exquisite sense of smell, these dogs became very popular and widely used as treeing hounds.
The early Black and Tan Coonhounds had a heavy build, long ears, large heads and bodies, with powerful, stout legs. A wonderful, loud bawl voices made them unsurpassed in their cold-trailing ability.

Early in the twentieth century, Hans Wagner from Tennessee, decided that the heavy set, Black and Tan was too slow on the trail, Wagner found this unsatisfactory. He and several others sharing his views started breeding a lighter, faster, shorter-eared Black and Tan Coonhound. All of the desirable characteristics of the old Black and Tan were maintained, but a dog more suited to competition was produced. Today, both varieties of the Black and Tan can be found.
It is difficult to fault a Black and Tan Coonhound at his best. He is a superb hunter commonly used to track not only raccoon, but big game such as mountain lion and bear. His voice is excellent. He is solidly-built. He is aggressive and has the stamina to easily withstand the grueling rigors of an all-night hunt. Like all the Coonhounds, he is intelligent and possesses good problem-solving ability. He has excellent treeing qualities and his ability to seek out a very faint track is arguably the most developed in the Coonhound family. Some will contend that the nose on the Black and Tan Coonhound is the most highly developed and effective in the canine world.
