If an agile, powerfully built, tenacious hunter with a loud voice and excellent treeing instincts is what you require, the Redbone Coonhound will, without question, fit your needs.
The sheer strength and endurance of this Coonhound make him a very competent hunter capable of handling difficult-to-negotiate, steep, rocky terrain. He is an excellent fence dog capable of handling 4-5 foot hurdles with relative ease. He is an excellent swimming hound. He is fast on the trail. He is intelligent, loyal and he is easily trained. Finally, the Redbone Coonhound is considered to be more gifted than many other Coonhounds in his natural ability and willingness to fight.
The origin of the Redbone Coonhound stems from the latter part of the 19th century when Redbone Foxhounds were used, but considered by many to be too slow and deliberate for the speedy game they pursued. Like the English and the Black and Tan, the Redbone Coonhound was admitted into the United Kennel Club in around 1900.

The Redbone, in the eyes of some, is the most impressive looking of all the Coonhounds. He is the only solid-colored Coonhound. He is muscular and solidly built. The usually solid red coat (white is allowed on the chest and feet) may come in deep red or various shades of lighter tan. In general, it isn't as "houndy" as some of the other Coonhounds. Although some strains have very long ears and large heads, many Redbones have shorter, higher set ears than some of the other members of the Coonhound family.
Though some of these Coonhounds may reach upwards of 80 or 90 pounds, the average weight of a Redbone usually falls between 45 and 75 pounds.
