This is not a coonhunting story, but a story of a black and tan coonhound
that I use to hunt birds with. I live out West in the Rockies, with steep
terrain being the major hunting grounds. I needed a rugged dog with thick
pads, a good nose, and something that would hunt all day. I've always liked
the looks of the black and tan, and after being around some for a while when
they were pups, decided I could train one for birds.
Her name is Blue (thought a hound should be named Blue), and has turned into
a phenomenal bird hunter. She will locate, flush, and retrieve the following
birds: Pheasant, chukar, quail, duck, partridge, and grouse. I know when we
are really close to a bird that is moving and hiding from her because she
will give out her patented low volume bay!! She will water retrieve all the
mentioned birds, but does not particularly like the taste of the duck.....she
brings it back and spits it out quickly. She's caught on to the hand signals
amazingly quick, and does blind retrieves.
If someone is looking for a rugged, smart, and loving dog, the black and tan
is it. I've owned labradors, and german short-hairs for hunting, and I will
never go back to them. I will continue to work with black and tans as long
as I hunt birds.
I thought you guys would enjoy hearing about a different type of hunting story that basically exploits the versatility and brains of the black and tan coonhound.
