A tale of a dogs struggleWritten by: Allen on 10/5/02I never really thought of owning a coonhound. It was fun to go, but I never thought my parents would agree. They did and so I got my coondog. I got the next to last pick. It was the one that I wanted though. I took her home with me and started coonhunting like crazy with my brother in law and his walkers. My pup was only a month and a half so I couldnt hunt her. I came to love and enjoy coonhunting. I trained my dog all the time. She just kept getting better and better. She was tracking and treeing at 3 and a half months. Then I was asked to take the runt of the litter too. I didnt want her because she wasnt doin any good. She wouldnt bark at the caged coon. My dad eventually talked me into it. That was the meanest little dog when she was a pup. She didnt take any crap. I came to know and love both my pups. Then my brother in law bought a new walker dog. He was a pretty sight. He was a coondog if I ever saw one. He treed his first coon at 4 and a half months. Well we had them all in the same pin. We had them on an automatic dog feeder. We just put a bunch of food in there till it ran out. We didnt know it but the bugs were getting in there and doing what they do. The dogs would eat it and it would weaken their imune system. We gave them worm shots but it didnt help. The run kaci got real bad sick. I saw her use the bathroom and I told my brother in law she just crapped out a lot of blood. It didnt really look like it then. It got worse and we thought it might be parvo. She wouldnt eat so we thought thats what it was. My dad the whole time thought it was probably worms. We took her to the vet and he told us that she has a blood level of 9. He said normal was 35. He said if she didnt have blood transfusion she would be dead. They didnt think she would live over night. Well you know even if they have a blood transfusion they might now live, so we had him shoot her up with vitamin k. We left her there expecting her to die. He said he thought it was poison, cause he aint never seen a worm take over like that. Later that day we got the dogs out of the pin. I brought mine to my house and my brother in law to his. I noticed mine was acting funny so I started force feeding her. The runt (kaci) was the fatest and she lost weight quick. So I force fed jezzy. I noticed she started crapping blood. I was so unhappy. I thought both my dogs are goners. Later on the walker(lucky) started doing the same so we took them to a different vet. He diagnosed them right away with hookworms. He gave them a shot, gave us some pills and sent them home. They came back whole new dogs ready to hunt. Kaci was still at the vet though. I kept praying for her and finally they said she was gonna make it. I went to get her but they wouldnt let me. They said she would die before we got home because it would stress her too much. So I just left her there till she was good to go. I walked in and heard her voice. She has a nice voice. Its not hard to recognize. I started hunting both my pups and they turned out great. Jezzy and Kaci are now treeing coon. Jezzy has treed a coon by herself but I havent hunted Kaci by herself yet. Lucky is one heck of a dog still and he is doing the same. I dont really have a point to this story. I just thought I would put a new one up. Thanks for listening.
